Requests made by Fishermen in the South West Region of Madagascar to strengthen their defences against marine hazards, are being responded to by government officials. The Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy Paubert Mahatante visited part of Ifaty village, headed by the Local Authorities and their Partners and the Associations (SANSFA, RENAFEP, FIMIHARA, ONG Reef Doctor), VAVEA or Vahatse ty Vezo Aharo.
The Fishermen’s Association in Ifaty donated life sails, “underwater torches”, “crank radios” and solar panels and mirrors. This area is famous for fishing and sightseeing. The town that introduced the tribe Vezo for ever and it provides fish to Toliara and surrounding areas.
The people thanked and applauded the Government and added to the requests they made regarding fishing equipment such as nets, “masks”, “palm” and “tuba” and “combination”. They also asked for motorised boats that can perform life-saving or “rescue”. The Minister replied that the Ministry and its insurance partners such as the International Bank are undergoing the SWIOFISH2 project and will be distributed soon.
